The El Niño phenomenon was gone now and the El Niña is here again, this is understood that we will expect a great downfall of rain that will cause flash flood and landslide in our area. This is because of the sudden change of our temperature that usually because of the cold ocean temperature of the pacific. According also to the Wikipedia,”During a period of La Niña, the sea surface temperature across the equatorial Eastern, Central Pacific Ocean will be lower than normal by 3–5 °C”. And Pag-asa also inform earlier of the La Niña will occur in the haft of the year of 2016. Therefore, in this case everyone of us needs our attentions. We had now in other news that there are Flash flood has happened in another country, like for example in Africa that killed people in that particular area. This is not new everyone of us, some of us are victims of flash floods and even landslide because of constant heavy rain in a days of the month.

So what we can do now? we can’t prevent this phenomenon if this will happen. So I list some of the important tips that could be helpful whenever this phenomenon will happen in your area.

Before Flood Will Occur

  1. Don’t build any house or a building where it is possible flood plain area.
  2. If flood possible in your house contract a barrier, beams or flood wall to stop the flood coming in your house.
  3. Seal the walls if you have basements in your house using waterproofing compound to avoid water seepage of the flood.
  4. Listen to radio stations or read information regarding the possible flood.
  5. Be aware of flood warning by your barangays or municipal government.

When A flood is oncoming in your area

  1. If your barangay officials inform for oncoming floods evacuate yourselves as necessary.
  2. Be prepared yourselves, pack a belongings with necessary to bring like medicines and foods.
  3. Bring flash lights or any lights if floods happen during nights.
  4. If you're caught in a flood, be sure to move yourselves in a higher ground.
  5. If possible, bring your appliances in upper limit or in a higher ground.
  6. Don’t forget to switch off your electricity to avoid electric shock.
  7. Avoid yourselves in an area where a possible landslide will occur.
  8. If possible, bring your cellphones that have a 911 emergency number for possible rescue.

During Flood In Your Area

  1. Don’t panic and do not move yourselves in a moving water as low as 6 inches or 15 centemeters that can be make you fall.
  2. If you’re driving a car, don’t drive in a flooded area or a moving water. If your car is flooded with water don’t hesitate to abandon it. Save yourself including your family within your car. And find a higher ground to save you.
  3. If your walking in flooded area where moving water is possible be aware on it, use a stick to check the firmness of the ground you are walking.
  4. If possible call the 911 or emergency hotline for possible recue operation.
  5. Avoid getting electricuted, avoid broken electrical wires near to you.

After A flood In Your Area

  1. Don’t drink or use water in your water system, with or call the authorities if the water is now ready to drink or safety. It is possible that it's contaminated by oil or gasoline, water may also electrically charge from underground or in a broken electrical post that may cause you to electrocute.
  2. Avoid moving water, find another way as necessary.
  3. If you're driving in a car on a road check and aware if it's flash flooded. The road may possibly weaken and could be collapse because of the weight of your car.
  4. Avoid down electrical power lines, if possible report it to the electric company or in a government authority.
  5. Do not return to your home unless government authorities permit you to return or safe.
  6. Stay out of any building that suffer flood waters, it could be collapsed.
  7. Repair any septic tank, or any in your area for safety and health purposes.
  8. Clean everything in your area or home that got wet because of mud left from floodwater. This could be contains chemicals or sewage or a virus infected by rat.

These are all possible to do when flash flood or flood will occur, its better to know it first so that we become aware when this happen in ourselves or in our family home or in our community.
